Young Changemaker – Jermaine Griggs

August 23, 2010

Jermaine Griggs (25yrs old) is a minister, musician, entrepreneur, and public speaker. Having grown up in the inner city of Long Beach with just his mom and sister, he always envisioned life on the other side of the tracks. At the tender age of 16, he decided to focus on his passion and started Hear and Play Music, an instructional music company specializing in teaching piano by ear. With only $70, he bought the name HearandPlay.com and launched the company that would not only change his life but hundreds of thousands of musicians around the world through his books, dvds, software and training courses.

Eight years later, over 2 million aspiring musicians download his online lessons every year and over 200,000 loyal students receive his regular newsletters. Having seen the site grow from a few students a month into an international musician “hub,” helping millions of people (both free and paid) is nothing short of amazing — and constantly reminds Jermaine of his humble beginnings. He knows what it feels like to be on both sides of the track and also shares his story with entrepreneurs all over the world regularly.

He is married to his high school sweetheart of ten years and has a 2-year old daughter named Jadyn. He is a graduate of University of California, Irvine, and currently resides in Orange County. He employs a team of 10 both locally and remotely and continues to expand as more passionate musicians find out about the site.

Davos Global Business Oath – World Economic Forum

As a business leader I recognize that

  • The enterprise I lead must serve the greater good by bringing together people and resources to create value that no single individual can create alone,
  • My decisions can have far-reaching consequences that affect the well-being of individuals inside and outside my enterprise, today and tomorrow,
  • As I reconcile the interests of different constituencies, I will face choices that are not easy for me and others,

So I promise that

  1. I will manage my enterprise diligently and in good faith and will not let personal considerations and compensation supersede the long-term interest of my enterprise and society at large,
  2. I will understand and uphold, both in letter and spirit, the laws and contracts governing my own conduct and that of my enterprise,
  3. I will respect and protect the human rights and dignity of all people who are affected by my enterprise and will oppose all forms of discrimination and exploitation,
  4. I will respect and protect the right of future generations to enjoy a clean and resourceful planet,
  5. I will not engage in nor tolerate bribery or any other form of corruption,
  6. I will represent the performance and risks of my enterprise accurately and honestly to each of the constituencies that are affected by it,
  7. I will actively engage in efforts to finding solutions to critical social and environmental issues that are central to my enterprise, and

This pledge I make freely and upon my honor.

Sarah Jameel – Young Changemaker Of The Week

August 9, 2010

As a former student of Bishops’ College Colombo, who is currently studying at Colombo International School (CIS), Sarah is passionate about healthcare and believes that affordable and reliable healthcare is a basic need and a right in a truly sustainable society. Her entry into community service and activism began as a 12 year old raising funds to provide medical equipment to tsunami affected schools in the East. That was just the beginning; from there on life has been a rollercoaster ride for Sarah and triumphs have been plenty. As an all rounder Sarah has achieved success both academically and as well as socially as an activist and a catalyst who strives to create a positive change in the society.

At first glance Sarah Jameel looks just like an ordinary 18 year old girl. She is bubbly, energetic, and talkative, and according to her mother is obsessed with Grey’s Anatomy. But the similarities end there and once we start chatting it really didn’t take much effort to realize how special she is. Sarah is a realist and a go getter who has spent most of her teenage life as a youth activist. Young as she is, Sarah is the kind of young woman who is determined to step into the real world and take a stand for the betterment of society. Her courage and determination fuels her passion to put herself out there and make that change some of us only dream of doing, so it really doesn’t come as a surprise that Sarah has just returned from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland where she represented the voice of youth as a Global Changemaker.

Mo Ibrahim Prize For Leadership 2010 Award – Finding Young Leaders

August 9, 2010

His name is Mo Ibrahim, a notable African entrepreneur who in spite his huge wealth still has a deep passion for seeing a prosperous Africa thus he instituted the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Leader. The Mo Ibrahim Prize seeks to recognise African Ex- Presidents who where honest, transparent and people focused in their developmental programs and reward such with a whooping $5m dollars grant among others. Thus encouraging ethical leadership among African statesmen.

So such a laudable initiative that i hope other elite Africans can emulate. But, in the last 2 years, The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has announced that it didnt identify an awardee, that is to say, there is a scarcity of suitable qualified African Ex- Presidents in the region to cart away his $5m generous prize! Since the latest announcement in 2010, i have become more worried about the state and future of our great continent. But also i have become excited as i see a great opportunity for upcoming next generation African leaders to pitch for honesty, integrity and value based leadership. As a renown youth leader, i am brooding positive thoughts in this direction, but at the same time i am thinking that there is a huge opportunity for Mo Ibrahim Foundation to consider investing part of their huge  funds  in developing and harnessing next generation leaders accross the continent, such an investment over a 10 years period i can bet has the real potential to greatly redirect the African region just as much as our current team of African leaders project to achieve.

Africa Will Work!

Young Changemaker 10

July 27, 2010

Seyi AjimokoMy name is Oluwaseyi Samuel Ajimoko, a social entrepreneur who believes so much in the future of Nigeria. I am a native of Ekiti State. I was born and raised in the city of Ibadan. I had my Secondary school education in Federal Government College Ido-Ani Ondo State and Studied Food Science and Technology in Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife Osun State.

While in OAU, I started a social networking site that was to connect students from Nigerian Universities and report news from campuses all around the country which was called ‘StudentSummit‘, and at that time accessible on www.studentsummit.net. The site also featured student achievers on a monthly basis. The column was created to celebrate students with extra-ordinary achievements and abilities. Apart from the news and the achievers column, the site also had entertainment columns like the autos and cribs columns where students’ rooms, houses and cars were featured weekly.

Unfortunately, ‘StudentSummit‘ could not stand the competition against the foreign and well funded social networking sites like the Hi5, photobucket, flickr and most recently facebook. The inability to draw funds and attract investors let to the death of the site and the birth of a new company which is today known as SparkleCity Nigeria Limited which is well positioned and more focused.

SparkleCity Nigeria is a Brand Consulting firm committed to helping both small and medium scale entrepreneurs grow their businesses, imbibe internationally acceptable best practices and standards, develop their brands and increase their brand equity. We are presently working on a program called the SparkleCity Projects and Research Exhibition 2010 which is coming up on 20th to 22nd of October 2010 at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Center FCT, Abuja in conjunction with the National Universities Commission (NUC). The aim of the program is to exhibit both past and present final year projects in our Universities to investors, Business owners, and policy makers in the government, the media and members of the public in a bid to get investors to invest in at least one of the projects and transform it into a product in our markets. More information on SPRE 2010 is available on our website www.sparklecity-ng.com.

Aside the program, SparkleCity from time to time turn out web packages and IT Solutions that enhance and promotes the participation and involvement of youths in the democratic processes in the Country and Nation building generally. Our most recent release is allova.com which is targeted towards promoting citizen journalism; an act which allows youths to report happenings in their respective communities to the world. We have created this because we believe before we can proffer solutions to the problems of our nation, we have to be well informed about what the problems are and there is no better way to do that other than to get involved.

I strongly believe that Nigeria can be better if we all play our part, and change begins with each and every one of us.
